Institutions and Individual Experience in Society There are many different attitudes and actions shown by the people in the text ‘Raw’ by Scott Monk and the film Shawshank Redemption that have had an impact on society and their image on institutions. The basic definition of an institution is an organisation which is founded for a religious, educational, social, imprisonment or similar purpose. The significance that these texts have on the image of institutions is so important through the elaborate actions and behavior of the characters and the roles in which they play in. The way in which Scott Monk in his book ‘Raw’ created his main character Brett was through many different attitudes that Brett has and his beliefs in the things around†¦show more content†¦Shawshank Redemption is about a middle aged man named Andy Defresne who has found his wife dead sleeping with another man which in turn has caused the authorities to suspect him as the main suspect and soon enough was imprisoned under the charge of double homicide which was a sentence of two life times. When he firsts arrives at prison he is locked in a cell and placed on yard duty in which many of the other cell mates looked at him with weary suspicious eyes. As each day passed he grew to learn the roles of his cellmates and who to stay away from, one of these men was a man called Red who was the main person who supplied things. Andy met Red through a simple arrangement, for him to obtain a rock pick. This interested Red a lot and his interest in Andy grew as each day passed. Andy was a Banker in his old life and when he over heard a guard complaining about his tax Andy offered him a deal to help him with his tax in return for a couple beers with 5 of his inmates on top of the roof, the guard agreed. As they were on the roof 5 of his inmates enjoyed beers except for him, he didn’t react or want anything, all he wanted was to stare out into the blue sky and the trees that surrounded the imprisonment. Documents and videos can be shared with students for complete online submission and collaboration. Student can work on and submit work online without ever having to print a hardcopy of a document. Teachers can upload files and hyperdocs for students to work on independently or in a collaborative manner. Teachers and students can communicate through Google classroom via forum posts or comments, this application brings the 21st century social aspect that students crave into the classroom setting. Now it is becoming apparent the digital literacy is vital in the growth of our students as they enter the workforce of the twenty first century. With applications like Scratch and Code.org students can become creators and masters of their own online worlds. Teachers can guide students in creating, designing and learning about the digital world. In the past students were given premade worksheets and were guided through textbooks. Determinism on the other hand argues that things or events that happen are as a result of things/events that happen in the past. Cultural Determinism vs Cultural Transcendence. The question here is that to what extent does our cultures shape us to become who we are? Just like the Free-will question, can we transcend cultural differences by rising above it? Should it so happen that we can transcend cultural difference, how can it be done, and how easy or difficult will it be to do so? I am inclined to believe that the culture in which we were born and raised shapes who we are emotionally and behaviorally, however the environment has a commanding influence. Joseph Conrads novel, Heart of Darkness, exemplifies this wall, or realm, through the manipulation of his characters narration. Initially, the narrative simply appears to be a reflection of Conrads style.However, as the story unfolds one may notice that the language and style can be interpreted as a literary tool. A tool that effectively illustrates the gradual deterioration, paranoia, and unresolvable confusion that man can experience when entering mysterious modes of consciousness; as Marlowe does in the African Congo. Conrad himself was subjected to the isolation and darkness of the Congo when he made his own journey through Africa. The complicated rhythm of the narrative with its quotations within quotations allows us, the reader, to partly understand, if not experience, the desolate feeling of loss and isolation that Marlowe is feeling as he is travelling through the Congo. Although Marlowe claims to be sane; the way in which he speaks is often contradictory, and his thoughts seem to suggest that he suffers from perpetual paranoia. Overall, Conrad brings into being a character in Marlowe who is suffering from an, attitude that recognizes the unresolvable confusion of the human world, and grasps outward at anything made to appear firm or familiarreason, God, nation, authority(Solomon, 1) For Marlowe, the point of firmness is Kurts, who he looks to with absolute adoration and searches to be at the same level.
