English Essay Explain how film codes are used to convey the elements of the science fiction genre in the film Star Wars. Start with the element of science fiction and then bring in the example Introduction George Lucas uses film codes in the film Star Wars to help convey the elements of science fiction. The film codes help to portray the science fiction through out the film. Unusual characters, unusual settings and advanced technology all portray the science fiction in the film. Technical, Audio and Symbolic are film codes that are particularly used in the film.Paragraph one Audio and technical codes are used to convey the element of science fiction, through the use of unusual characters. This can be shown through the way the camera looks at the character to show power and vulnerability. For example when R2D2 is hiding from the sand people they take a close up of him. This shows that he is vulnerable as the sand people might take him otherwise. Another example of technical codes woul d be when there is a low angle taken of when a sand person is on a bantha. This shows that the sand people are powerful.An example of when audio codes are used is when the sand people speak their different language. This is used to make the viewer unfamiliar with the character and think of them as foreign. Another example of audio is the tribal music, to show that the sand people are coming and make the viewer aware of their presence. These examples of film codes in this scene help to convey this element of science fiction. Paragraph 2 Audio and technical codes are used to convey the element of science fiction, through the use of unusual settings. This can be shown through the use of audio one way would be the sound effects.For example when serpent is lurking in the water in the trash contractor. This helps to create suspense for the viewer, as they don’t know what is going to happen. Another example when the trash contractor is shutting, this sound effect helps to create anx iety and worry for the viewer as they wait to see what happens. Technical is another code that is used in this scene to help show the science fiction element of unusual setting. This can be seen when there is a close up of Han solo’s feet in the water. This shows the viewer that the group are vulnerable and creates suspense for the viewer.Another example of a technical code would be when there is a long shot of the trash contractor closing in on Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia and Luke. This is example of a technical code shows the viewer that they are in trouble and creates a feeling of anxiety. All of these examples of film codes help to convey the particular element of science fiction. Paragraph 3 Symbolic and Audio codes are used throughout the scene to convey the element of science fiction through the use of good vs. evil. An example of a symbolic code would be how Darth Vader’s lightsaber is red and Obi Wan Kenobi’s in Blue.This symbolises that Darth Va der is evil and Obi Wan Kenobi is good. Another example of a symbolic code can be shown when Darth Vader kills Obi Wan and all that is left is Obi’s coat and Darth Vader stomps on it. This symbolises Obi Wan Kenobi’s power. An Example of an audio code can be shown when there is silence in the movie and all you can hear is the lightsbaers. This creates suspense for the viewer as well as making them anxious. Another example of an audio code is shown when Luke says ‘no’ when Obi Wan Kenobi dies. This shows that Luke cares for him and makes the viewer feel as if it won't be the same with out him.All of these examples of film codes help to convey the science fiction element of Good vs. Evil. Conclusion In conclusion film codes are used throughout the movie to convey the elements of science fiction. The elements of science fiction are portrayed by different films codes and can be seen particularly in Symbolic, audio and technical codes. In addition, managers must be patient to people in order for people have enough time to make any adjustment for them to adapt new things successfully. Listen to employees and counsels them with ease. To be succeeding in change, managers have to take a lot of issues into consideration. It may be hard for managers to implement change, but here are some suggestions to managers to implement change successfully. First of all, managers should have a good planning of change before they carry out. Planning is help manager to be aware of what they want to achieve and how they going to achieve it. Secondly, managers should encourage participate. Besides all these causes, there are more reason about why individuals dislike or afraid of change. First of all, an individual may against towards all new things (Frank Calberg Service, 2007). For an example an individual maybe complaining or refuse to learn new things. People who dislike learning or accepting new knowledge will give a lot of excuse to escape changing by saying that they have no time, no money to pay to attend courses or training (Redman, 2012). Secondly, people are self doubt (Pratt, 2012). Usually people who are self doubt mostly named themselves not good enough, not smart enough, boring, unattractive, and unlikeable, self doubt can lead them to get defensive (Fox, Sokol, 2009). People who are in self doubt situation will defense themselves do not do others thing that they never try before because they don’t have enough confidence to change (Exposing fear of change, 2011). Further, individuals who are fear of change may because they afraid the bad experience in the past repeat in their life (Radwan, 2012). Individuals who had tried to change in their past but obtained a traumatic experience of change that haunts them will affect them feel so afraid of changing. However, Dr Swaim (2011) argued that people do not afraid of change. He claimed that if people afraid of change then how to explain that there is a big changes in election victory of a little known junior senator form Illinious, Barack Hussein Obama, whose 2007based on the slogan â€Å"change we can believe in†. In addition, a psychologist and life coach Dr Suzy Green (n. d) also argued that most of the people find change is scary is just an excuse. She also claimed that individual makes excuse is because they has low confident or failure in past of changing. Secondly, old habits of individuals is ingrained and it is hard to shake off the behaviors that been developed for a long time, she explained that the excuses people make when they are not ready to tackle their behaviors need to be turned around. The movie of The Queen focuses on individual’s change and it pointed out that change request individual to give up the comfortable ways of thinking and acting. Further, comfort zone is the external environment tends to be placid or at least changes are slow or predictable and it has the ability to change (Jarret, 2009, p. 44). In another word, individual is required to give up the habits they used to be in daily life. For individual to leave their comfort zone is sounds scary to them because it will make them feel anxious (Pawlik-Kienlen, 2007). Individual will feel anxious because they afraid of failure, afraid of new things, fear of criticism and fear of discomfort (O’Callahan, 2012). In addition, Jeffery Schwartz and Sharon Begley in the article claimed that it is hard near the core of brain if habits that a person form by training and experience. Further, brain use intense energy in processing new material, this process enquiry brain to work hard to match new material. Chris Berdik (2012) agrees by saying that evaluating every new experience in detail would be tough on our brains and it would hog energy and attention that could be better used elsewhere. Furthermore, accept new things require forming new connections within the brain, which results in greater conscious effort and attention on our part People need to do their work by writing down everything but nowadays everyone is using a computer or laptop to help them finish all theirs works without any delays. Further, nowadays more companies are trying to be globalisation instead of doing business within own country to earn more profit and individual who working in that particular company gets higher salary and maybe get a chance to fly. All these changes to people in an organisation are easily to be seen and it seems like bringing them a lot of benefits. So, is it can be concluded that changing is easy to be achieved for an individual and they love to change without any hesitate? From birth throughout their lives time people are taught the uses of language and create a way of communication. Language is the main component for all humans. â€Å"The use of language-the communication of information through symbols arranged according to systematic rules-is a central cognitive ability, one that is indispensable for us to communicate with one another† (Stapel Semin, 2007; Hoff; 2008; Resiberg). Language is essential to how we communicate, think, and understand the world. Without language our ability to convey information, obtain knowledge and cooperate with others would be hindered. In order to comprehend how language is created and relates to thought, we first need to know that the basic structure of language is grammar. Grammar is a set of rules that clarifies how our thoughts can be articulated. There are three main elements that go with grammar; they are phonology, syntax, and semantics. Phonology is the study of the smallest unit of speech called phonemes. Phonemes are the way we use sounds to form words and produce meaning. Syntax deals with how words and phrases can be united to form sentences and semantic rules allow us to express meanings to words. Feldman, Robert S. (2011). Although many people may have a hard time explaining the meanings of these words, we all subconsciously use grammar every day in a linguistic way! Language starts during infancy from three months through one-year- old. Children begin to make insignificant speech like sounds that is called babble. In the textbook Feldman, Robert S. (2011) stated that while babbling, they produce, at one time or another, any of the sounds found in all languages, not just the one to which are exposed. Even deaf children demonstrate their own form of babbling, who are incapable to hear, yet who are exposed to sign language from birth babble in their own way. In the same textbook I stated before Feldman, Robert S. (2011); indicates that babies’ babbling imitates the precise language being spoken in the infant’s environment which focuses more on the pitch and tone of the person talking to the child. As the baby gets older, he or she starts to specialize in the language that they were exposed to from birth. To support what I am saying I read an article called Language and Brain Development â€Å"Jump Start† copyright United Feature Syndicate stated that â€Å"a child is introduced to language virtually at the moment of birth. Children do not require explicit language instruction, but they do need exposure to language in order to develop normally. Children who do not receive linguistic input during their formative years do not achieve native like grammatical competence.† There were three theorists that had their own speculation on language acquisition but intertwined with my thesis. Let us begin with Noam Chomsky. Chomsky was a very well- known linguist. He believes that human brains have a language acquisition device that we are inborn with. All children are born with a universal grammar that makes them amenable to the common features of language because of this hard-wired background in grammar; children easily pick up a language when they are exposed to its particular grammar. Basically Chomsky believed that all children develop language around the same age and all develop language skills rapidly and naturally. The next theorist was Benjamin Lee Whorf. Whorf’s theory is that children will learn language skills through interaction with others rather than obtain the knowledge involuntarily. He was recognized for his study that focused on a person’s thinking skills, how their ideas and expressions all depend on language. He anticipated a theory called â€Å"linguistic relativity.† This theory determines the way people think. In other words â€Å"â€Å"we think in terms of words or other symbols, and they are required as a precondition for a human to form an idea—or, at least, to express the idea to others. Although thinking involves mental manipulation of reality, it is heavily dependent upon words or other symbols.† Bergman. Jerry (Benjamin Lee Whorf: An Early Supporter of Creationism). My last theorist was B.F. Skinner. Skinner thought language is attained through standards of conditioning, association, imitation and, reinforcement. The difference from Chomsky and Skinner one believed he or she is born with language where Skinner believed that people have to be taught how to speak by some one’s language acquisition. All three theorists have their own assumptions on language acquisition. Chomsky believes we are born with the skills for language. Skinner believes children is learn through imitation that focuses on behavior and Whorf thought language was developed by interaction with peers rather than being born with it. The one major factor that they all share is the importance of language from birth. If children are deprived of language from the start they will suffer drastically, which proves my statement in the beginning; which was, children who are isolated from language and communication from the early ages will deal with major effects when they are older. A major period that some theorists believe is crucial for language development is called the critical period, which can cause many effects in learning language. From the article â€Å"Introduction Brain and Language† explained what the critical-age hypothesis was. This theory believes language is organically based and the capacity to learn your inhabitant language develops from birth to middle childhood. Subsequent to this period, the attainment of grammar is complicated for most people and never fully grasped. Children who are not exposed of language during this critical period will have a difficult time overcoming this deficit. This concept can be proved to be true in humans and other species. 22. Introduction Brain and Language gave an example of ducklings. For instance, from nine to twenty-one months after hatching, ducks will follow the first moving object they see regardless if it is a duck or not. This behavior did not come subconsciously but from an â€Å"external teaching, or intensive practice.† Other examples of the critical period that is strongly associated to language learning is the critical period in certain songbirds, e.g., zebra finches or white crowned sparrows (Marler, 1970). For children there have been cases that support this theory. For instance, there was a young boy who was isolated from society also known as the â€Å"wild† child. In the film produced by Francois Truffaut â€Å"The Wild Child† was based on a young boy named Victor. It was determined that he was left in forest and survived shockingly. (Language and Brain Development 23.) In the YouTube documentary we learned that Victor was not capable to speak or recognize language. He was brought to Paris where he was first put into a deaf school, but after Francois Truffaut observes Victor he believes he can hear and can be educated. Another perfect example that supports the conjecture of the critical period is a girl named Genie. Genie as well as Victor was a wild child. Genie was abused and isolated from all society from eighteen months to about fourteen years of age. Genie was restricted to a small room under terrible conditions and received minimal to none of human contact. Genie was not able to talk or knew any language at all. (Language and Brain Development 23) said â€Å"this linguistic inability could simply be caused by the fact that these children received no linguistic input, showing that language acquisition, though an innate, neurologically based ability, must be triggered by input from the environment.† Like Victor, Genie learned some kind of language but lacked â€Å"grammatical structure.† Possessing language is essential to have living in a society. Without language you would not be able to communicate, give, and receive knowledge. For instance Genie; in (Introduction Brain and Language) said â€Å"The cases of Genie and other isolated children, as well as deaf late learners of ASL, show that children cannot fully acquire language unless they are exposed to it within the critical period—a biologically determined window of opportunity during which time the brain is prepared to develop language.† People use and develop language in their lives and it is important to have developed it in an early age. There is direct network between manufacturer of components and Toyota, so that it does not have to maintain inventory. Toyota has wide network of 211 dealers in Australia. The potential buyers of hybrid car are from higher income group and they stay in metropolitan cities. Hybrid car market can be developed in developed countries and advanced cities. Hybrid car owners are educated and have concern towards environmental factors. Hybrid car owners are few years older than average car buyers . 3. 2. 2. Competitive environment: Toyota was the first develop hybrid passenger car called Prius. The biggest competitor of Toyota is Honda. Honda has its hybrid model Insight which poses competition to Prius. Recently ford has also launched hybrid version of its popular SUV Escape. Ethanol blended fuel car also pose competition to hybrid cars, as they have low emission and good mileage. Also non-hybrid cars are not much costly as compared to hybrid cars. 3. 2. 3. Considering the positive side, many companies gives special offers and incentives to encourage purchasing of hybrid vehicle. There are also Government rebates to encourage buying of hybrid vehicles. Considering the negative side customer has to pay around five to seven thousand dollars more for hybrid vehicle against non-hybrid vehicles. The battery and electric motor replacement are costly parts. Repairs and maintenance facilities are limited to dealerships only. 3. 2. 4. Demographic environment: Demographic environment is very much interest to the marketers. As demography involve people and it is the people who make the market for any product. The private market is an important market, where the consumer is either male or female and in the age group of 30 to 50 years old. The consumers are from wealthy class, they are educated, well informed and they are from AB socio-economic segment. Hence the consumer can be in profession like administrative, or higher managerial or professional occupation who are ready to purchase environmental-friendly car and also pay more for its exceptional features. 3. 2. 5. Social and cultural environment This environment represents the effect of religion, fashion, population trends; social issues like equality and social movements such as environmentalism (Dann, 2004). The customers are from higher income group. Customers have higher level of education, who is concerned about environmental crises. Prius focuses on the customers with age group few years older than the average car buyers, and mostly women prefer for this car. Political and legal environment Australia is quite receptive towards foreign firms to invest in country. Government attract foreign investment by giving various incentives. Australia is politically stable country and has democratic government. Target markets: Target market consists of a set of buyers who share common needs or characteristics that the company has decided to serve (Kotler et. al, 2007). Toyota is the first mass produced hybrid car. Hybrid car market is new and having light competitive. Prius belong to the lower to medium passenger car segment. Toyota has competition from Honda’s Insight, which is the two-seat sports car. But it is not offering the features like Prius. Prius focuses on providing comfort to passenger segment i. e. C, so there is strong competition in this segment . The target market for Prius concentrate on two major categories: the customers and consumer. Customers are corporate buyers and fleet. Customers buy cars either for corporate hire / rental or for company fleets. Toyota can make tie-ups with corporate and provide special offers to them. They can be reached through business press and media. Since Prius is low in operating cost and its environmental friendly features makes it interesting for business buyers. In consumer market, Prius focuses on consumer who is few years older than average car buyers. It focuses especially females with higher income group. Consumers who are eco friendly and educated are also targeted . 5. 2. Product strategies: â€Å"It is the total benefit that the seller offers through its product features to its customers† (Dann and Dann, 2004 p20). Toyota Prius is a product which requires high involvement and it’s having unique features, which require personal selling. Personal selling can be achieved through the dealer network, which will be given special training about the car, its advantages and also trained to overcome objections form customers. Personal training is also useful to target corporate customers and fleet buying customers, who buy fleet of cars for rental or corporate use, by convincing them about the environmental factors and efficiency in long term use. Dealers should also personally visit the potential buyer group, like environmental friendly and higher income group. 5. 3. Pricing strategies: â€Å"Pricing strategy is a cost to the customer incurred by acquiring and using the products† (Dann and Dann, 2004 p20). As Prius is new technology and new product in market it is some-what costly than other traditional cars. To make people buy Prius, company should implement sales promotion and there should be incentives to buy Prius. This helps product to be accepted in market at its early stage of life-cycle. There should be tie-ups with government to encourage the sale of hybrid and clean cars. Government should give incentives to buy low emission and hybrid cars. Currently Prius is available between ranges of $37,400 to $46,900. This price tag is quite high as compared to other cars of the same segment. 5. 4. Promotion strategies: â€Å"Promotion strategy is the use of audio and visual communications, elements of marketing for the purpose of getting a message to the market place† (Dann and Dann, 2004 p20). The promotion of the Prius can be done through mass communication media. There should be continuous advertisement in news papers and magazines about the cars and its features. Television commercials are expensive, but they are very effective strategy in promotion. Other media is radio and hoardings which can influence customers to buy car. The brand image of the product can be made by sponsoring some sports events or similar kind of promotion, which will boosts sales of the car. One of the better ways to promote Prius is associate it with some celebrity from Hollywood or some sports or cricket personality. This will create a different image of car for the people. 5. 5. Distribution strategies Distribution strategy plays an important role in marketing. Toyota is having wide network of 211 dealers in Australia. The retail private buyer i. e. consumer will buy the car from the franchised dealer network. There should be special dealers for the fleet buyers, who buy cars in fleet for corporate or rental use, so as to demonstrate the benefits and advantage of hybrid car. This should be directly connected to company so that the cars can be customised according to the need of the corporate users. There should be strong supplier network. Distribution strategy should be set for the supplier network also so that it receives components and parts on just-in-time basis. 6. Recommendations for change: As Prius is new concept with new technology, there should be rigorous testing on the car so that product is placed at strong position in market. Testing with the customer and consumer makes their ideas clear about the car and encourage them to go for hybrid car. There should be campaigns and promotion activities for corporate and fleet buying customers. Company should carry out seminars and demonstration for customer, where they are explained the benefits of hybrid cars and its benefits in long term use. There should be personal promotion strategy used by the dealer. The existing customers of Toyota and the owners of expensive car should be contacted by mail and telephone to create awareness for the vehicle. Company should create awareness about environmental concern and rising fuel price. Government should participate in promotion activity to use hybrid cars by giving incentives or tax benefits for the hybrid car customers. There should be research and development to reduce the cost of the car. There should be specialised dealer network for specialised hybrid car like Prius. Television, print media, radios; hoardings are one of the best means for the promotion activity. 7. Implementation plan: The above recommended plan can be implemented by using various promotion activities. The dealer should make the car run on streets of city with promotional advertisement on the car. This creates direct impact on the people. The car should be promoted by television programs which deal with cars like the Top Gear on BBC, which can create a positive image of the car. Promotional activity can be carried out by the use of print media in business magazine like The Time, Fortune, etc. also in daily news papers and periodicals. Outdoor billboards should be placed in busy areas like station and in urban areas. Internet can be used to directly reach to people. There should be online brochures and facility to have detailed specification of car. Customers should be able to book car online and also test drive. Time line must be set and there should be target number of vehicles that must be sold within the time frame.
